Hi Phil – you nailed it. Tried my Mavic Mini this holiday to add some new angles to my GoPro footage. The Mavic Mini doesnt have active tracking, so I used it for scenery and to film my son. It produced some great shots, but was very time consuming indeed. I had my son do a few runs of the same slope in order to get multiple shots. However, the battery life of the Mavic Mini isnt such that you can leave it up in the air between runs. In the end, I especially used the shots of the surroundings.
Nice video mate, 2 quick questions – 1) Did you not get any grief from the ski patrol as I am not sure they are very happy with drones on the slopes? 2) Do you know if they sorted the terrain and follow me problem? Subbed cheers
It takes some practice in the park, but when you carefully operate the controls you can go down while in track me mode, you can also reel around yourself in circles, get closer and further away, while the camera keeps tracking you.
Having a buddy (or filming for a buddy) gives best footage hands down
Hey Phil, really nice tips!!! I'm going to Argentina for a snowboard season in Aug and even through I have a Mavic Air, the same can be applied for me, specially the ND filters! Very helpful. Tks!
If i start follow mode with circles above me and start skiing i would like the drone to follow me but i want it to drop the altitude as i go down so i remain the same size in the frame… that is the only reason i would buy this drone but i was not able to find is this possible or not? Can it be done automatically or manually by other person?
Hi Phil, I'm with you on the frustrating aspect in that it seems that none of the drones from DJI, none from any manufacturer at all excepting Airdog (very expensive) will follow you from a set height while descending in altitude. If you have heard of any decently priced drones that have this feature I'd love you to do a piece on it. Thanks man, great film.
Hi, Phil. Can you tell me, how good is this thing in avoiding obstacles while following you? Can it, for example, suddenly hit a tree/house or it can easily dodge them automatically?
In follow me can you start the drone further down the hill with the gimble pointed up at you lock on and watch you go by and then follow? Curious if that would work, because then you would get more usable footage.

March 5, 2022 at 2:18 amNeed better software and processing power to follow you exactly how you want as you are going down the mountain.
Maybe I'll wait for a better generation where it can follow you down the mountain.
Good advice about having other people standing around.

March 5, 2022 at 2:18 amDoes it still doesn't follow you down the slope? Was there any better update?

March 5, 2022 at 2:18 amIf it can't keep the same distance as you go down the slope, it's basically worthless for skiing videos.
